WHAT ARE ‘LAB GROWN’ DIAMONDS?

Lab-grown diamonds are real stones that are created in a laboratory rather than mined from the earth. They have the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural diamonds, but they are more affordable and ethical. Lab-grown diamonds are created using advanced technology that mimics the natural diamond formation process, resulting in a diamond that is almost indistinguishable from a natural one.

HOW CAN YOU TELL THE ‘DIFFERENCE’?

To the untrained eye, there is only one way to identify the difference between a lab grown or natural diamond – through the certificate.

There are two types of lab grown diamonds – High Pressure, High Temperature and Chemical Vapor Deposition. In layman’s terms, HPHT mimics the pressure and temperature in which a diamond naturally grows and CVD grows a ‘seed’ of a diamond using superheated gas. The different growth methods produce different rough stones, but produce the same final product as each other – beautiful diamonds!

For specialists, they look at the ‘morphology’ of a diamond, which is how the stone forms. According to the Gemological Institute of America, “Natural diamonds that formed in the Earth over millions of years grow differently from diamonds created in a laboratory in a few weeks.” (2019)

This is the only way to distinguish between the two as fundamentally both are diamonds.

While these rough shapes are lost when a diamond is cut, there are certain ‘identifying markers’ that scientists look for. It is the same for most organic materials – there are patterns to everything, and a change in circumstances causes something to grow in a different way.

The ability to tell the difference between a lab grow diamond and a natural is slim to none by the naked eye. At the heart of it all the difference is this – one is grown in a laboratory and the other is mined from the earth.

what do you offer?

At Voltaire Diamonds, we believe that everyone should have access to beautiful, high-quality diamonds. That’s why we offer a wide range of diamonds in various shapes, sizes, and colors. The significant advantage of lab-grown diamonds is their remarkable affordability.

Traditional mined diamonds often come with a hefty price tag due to the complex and costly process of extracting them from the earth. In contrast, lab-grown diamonds offer an accessible option without compromising on quality or beauty. Lab-grown diamonds can be bought at a fraction of the price of their natural counterparts. This affordability opens up new possibilities for individuals seeking jewellery within their budget and allowing them to celebrate life’s special moments without financial constraints.

With lab-grown diamonds, luxury and elegance become attainable for all.
