Cleaning and Maintaining That Wedding Ring

As we all know diamonds are very expensive and unique stones and deserve special care and attention. Therefore, here are some tips on how to look after your engagement and wedding ring or any other diamond jewellery.

Needless to say diamond jewellery should never be worn whilst participating in any sporting activities as diamonds, though being the hardest known substance, are also very brittle and can crack or chip under the shock of a sudden, sharp impact. Similarly, wearing diamond rings or other jewellery to a swimming pool or hot tub is not a good idea as they can be affected by harsh chemicals such as chlorine and bleach.

It’s also worth noting that lotions, soaps, powders, perfumes and hair spray can easily adhere to a diamond’s surface and can cause it to loose its sparkle and brilliance. Even a thin film on a diamond can absorb some light and reduce the amount that is reflected to the person looking at it. Therefore, make sure your skin is free from these type of beauty products prior to putting on your jewellery.

From time to time you may want to clean your diamond jewellery at home and contrary to popular belief, toothpaste is not recommended. The abrasives present in toothpaste will subtly dull the metal of your diamond setting.

We recommend preparing a solution of 1 part ammonia to 4 parts warm water. Add a small amount of a mild washing up liquid. Let your jewellery soak for approximately 10 minutes. Scrub the jewellery gently with a new soft toothbrush that you will use for jewellery cleaning only. Dip the jewellery in the solution repeatedly then rinse under warm water and pat the jewellery dry with a lint-free cloth.

Never wash jewellery over an open sink as a loose stone may fall out and end up down the sink. Make sure to put the plug hole in, or use a separate dish.

The best way to store your diamond ring is to place it separately from other jewellery. For example, in fabric-lined cases or cloth pouches.

We would also advise having your diamond jewellery professionally inspected at least once a year for loose stones, bent prongs, or signs of any wear and tear.

We hope that some of these tips were worthwhile and ensure your engagement ring or diamond jewellery give many years of radiant and sparkling pleasure.
